If finding the facts about technology really important for our survival, and if a fair legal process - the key to finding the facts, what can we do about it? We do not need to start with improved procedures; We can start with informal attempts to improve the procedures that we have. Then, we can develop better procedures by varying our methods and selecting those that work best. The validity of the trial - it is a matter of degree. Existing institutions could move toward a fair trial by changing some of its rules and traditions. They could guarantee each side the right to present evidence, examine the evidence and make a cross-examination of experts. They could open their meetings to the public. Each of these steps would reinforce the validity of the process, turning the meeting of the Star Chamber in the institutions that deserve more respect.
