In August 1280 Pope Nicholas III died, and Charles finally were free hand - he began to prepare for a long time already conceived attack on Constantinople. Peloponnesian ports and harbors that were under its control, would be very useful to send a naval expedition, but the lack of an adequate fleet of Charles made it impossible. The attack should be carried out with sushi. In the autumn of 1280 the army, which numbered about 8,000 people, including 2,000 cavalry and a large group of Saracen archers, headed east across Albania - to the Byzantine fortress of Berat.
